1. Introduction
Psi-quencer is a creative tool that transforms images into music. By analyzing visual data, it generates MIDI notes that can be sent to synthesizers, DAWs, or virtual instruments. Whether you’re a musician, sound designer, or digital artist, Psi-quencer offers a unique way to explore the musical potential of images.

2. Getting Started
System Requirements
- Operating System: Windows, macOS, or Linux
- RAM: 4GB minimum (8GB recommended)
- Storage: 100MB free space
- MIDI-Compatible Device (Optional) – For external sound generation.
Installation
- Download the Psi-quencer installer from the official website.
- Run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Launch Psi-quencer from your applications folder.
Activation & Licensing
Psi-quencer requires a valid license key to function. Upon first launch, you will be prompted to activate the software.
How to Activate:
- If you already have a license key:
- Copy the key to your clipboard.
- Click « I have a key » in the activation window.
- The software will validate and activate automatically.
- If you need to purchase a license:
- Click « Buy a license » to proceed to the purchase page.
- After payment, you will receive a license key via email.
- Copy the key and restart Psi-quencer to activate.
Deactivating a License
- Go to License Information in the menu.
- Click « Deactivate » to remove the license from your system.
3. Interface Overview
Main Window
The Psi-quencer interface consists of:
- Image Display Area – Drag and drop images here to load them.
- Generation Monitor – Shows real-time MIDI note generation.
- Control Panel – Adjust parameters for music generation.
Controls & Parameters
Control | Description |
---|---|
Image Duration (s) | Controls how long it takes to scan through the entire image. |
Trigger Period (ms) | Sets the time interval between generated notes. |
Note Duration (ms) | Determines how long each note plays. |
Pitch Range | Adjusts the minimum and maximum MIDI note values. |
MIDI Output Device | Selects which MIDI device receives the generated notes. |
Playback Mode | Toggle between Loop (continuous playback) and Manual (free exploration). |
ON/OFF Switch | Enables/disables MIDI note generation. |
4. Using Psi-quencer
Loading Images
- Drag and drop an image file into the Image Display Area.
- The software will analyze the image and begin generating MIDI notes.
Adjusting Parameters
- Use the sliders to modify Image Duration, Trigger Period, Note Duration, and Pitch Range.
- Experiment with different settings to achieve varied musical results.
Playback Modes
- Loop Mode – Continuously cycles through the image.
- Manual Mode – Allows free exploration by clicking to position the playhead.
MIDI & OSC Output
- Select MIDI Device: Click « Select MIDI Output » to choose a destination.
- Special note to Windows users: there is no MIDI inter application communication by default.You may want to use some third-party software, like ipMIDI from link nerds.de
- OSC Messages: Psi-quencer also sends OSC messages to
/psi_midi/note/
for integration with other software.
6. Troubleshooting
Common Issues & Solutions
- No MIDI Output?
- Ensure a MIDI device is selected in the settings.
- Check your DAW or synthesizer is receiving MIDI signals.
- Activation Failed?
- Verify the license key is copied correctly (including dots and dashes).
- Restart the application and try again.
- Image Not Loading?
- Ensure the file is a supported format (JPEG, PNG, etc.).
- Try a different image.
